Frequently asked questions
Should I use the mean or the median?
The mean when the marks are fairly evenly spread. The median when a few very high or very low scores would distort it โ it is the middle value and ignores how extreme the extremes are.
What does standard deviation tell me about a class?
How tightly the marks cluster. A low figure means most students scored near the average; a high one means a wide spread, which usually signals a paper that separated those who had prepared from those who had not.
Are blank entries counted as zero?
No โ blanks and anything that is not a number are ignored entirely. Counting an absent student as zero would drag the class average down misleadingly, so if you want that, enter the zeros explicitly.
