Frequently asked questions
Is "30% off plus extra 10% off" the same as 40% off?
No — it is 37% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. On ₹1,000 that is ₹630 rather than ₹600. Shops advertise it this way precisely because it sounds larger than it is.
Is tax charged before or after the discount?
After. GST applies to the discounted price, so a larger discount also reduces the tax. A price advertised as inclusive of tax should already reflect this, but it is worth checking the bill.
How do I work out the discount percentage from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original, multiply by 100. Enter the sale price in the last field and the tool does it — useful for checking whether an advertised discount is really what it claims.
How do I compare a flat discount against a percentage?
Convert the flat amount to a percentage of the price you would pay. ₹500 off ₹2,000 is 25%; off ₹5,000 it is 10%. Flat coupons favour smaller baskets, percentage discounts favour larger ones.
