Frequently asked questions
How much car can I afford?
Common guidance is to keep the total โ EMI plus fuel, insurance and servicing โ under 15โ20% of take-home pay. Budgeting only the EMI is the standard mistake, because running costs often come to half the EMI again.
What running costs should I expect?
For a mid-size car driven 12,000 km a year: roughly โน80,000 in fuel, โน20,000โ25,000 insurance and โน10,000โ15,000 servicing โ around โน9,000 a month before any EMI or depreciation.
Should I include depreciation in affordability?
Not in the monthly budget, since it is not a bill you pay โ but it is a real cost and the largest one. Check the Car Depreciation tool to see what the purchase actually costs you over the years you own it.
