Frequently asked questions
Do weekends count in a notice period?
Yes. Notice periods in India run on calendar days, so weekends and public holidays fall inside them. Only the last working day itself is usually moved if it lands on a non-working day.
How is a notice buyout calculated?
Usually the per-day salary multiplied by the days you are short. This tool uses monthly salary divided by 30. Many contracts use basic pay only and some use the full cost to company, so check the clause in your appointment letter.
Can I use my leave balance to shorten the notice?
Sometimes. Some employers allow leave to be set off against notice, some pay it out instead, and some refuse both during the notice period. Confirm with HR before you commit to a joining date.
Will my new employer pay the buyout?
Many will, especially when they want you sooner. It is a normal thing to ask during negotiation, and easier to agree before you have signed than after.
