Frequently asked questions

How long does rooftop solar take to pay back?

Typically four to seven years in India once a subsidy is applied, and longer where tariffs are low. The two things that decide it are your tariff — the higher it is, the more each generated unit saves — and whether your state pays for exported units.

Will solar cover my whole bill?

Only up to what you generate and use. Without net metering, units generated while nobody is home are simply wasted, so a system sized well beyond daytime consumption does not pay. Check your state’s net metering rules before sizing beyond your own use.

What does this leave out?

Panels lose about half a per cent of output a year, and the inverter usually needs replacing around year 10 to 12. Neither is in the payback figure, so treat the result as an optimistic first pass and get real quotes.
