Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip in India?
Tipping is not customary and never obligatory. Where it is offered, 5–10% is normal in a restaurant. Check the bill first — many places add a service charge, and tipping on top of it is paying twice.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Pre-tax is the fairer basis, since the tax is not part of the service. The difference is small on most bills, but the tool offers both.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
No. A service charge is added by the restaurant and, under Indian consumer guidance, is voluntary — you can ask for it to be removed. A tip is discretionary and goes to the staff directly, which is not always true of a service charge.
