Frequently asked questions

How do I write bold text in WhatsApp?

Put a single asterisk on each side: *bold*. It has to touch the text โ€” *bold* works, * bold * does not. This is not Markdown, so double asterisks will simply appear as asterisks.

What formatting does WhatsApp support?

Four marks: *bold*, _italic_, ~strikethrough~ and ```monospace```. They can be combined, so *_this_* comes out bold and italic. There is no underline, no colour and no font size.

Why did my formatting not work when I pasted it?

Some keyboards and clipboard managers strip the characters, and formatting inside a copied block can be lost. Check the message in the chat before sending it to a list โ€” and note that the marks disappear once sent, so you cannot edit them back in afterwards.
